Babachir Lawal Quits ADC, Alleges Primaries Were Rigged for Atiku

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress, citing alleged irregularities in the party's recently concluded primaries.

In a statement released on Monday, Lawal accused the party leadership of conducting primaries that were “massively rigged” in favour of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and his political associates.

According to Lawal, the outcome of the exercise had been predetermined, undermining the principles of fairness and internal democracy expected in a political party. He said his decision to leave the ADC was informed by his unwillingness to remain part of what he described as a culture of silence over alleged electoral malpractice within the party.

The former SGF further expressed concern over the direction of the party, arguing that the conduct of the primaries had weakened confidence among members and supporters seeking credible political alternatives ahead of future elections.

Lawal's resignation marks a significant development within the ADC, where internal disagreements have continued to generate debate among party stakeholders.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the ADC leadership nor Atiku Abubakar had publicly responded to the allegations raised by the former SGF.

The claims of rigging remain allegations and have not been independently verified.
