Monthly Sanitation: Lagos Transport Operators Agree to Morning Shutdown

Transport union leaders in Lagos State have pledged full support for the re-introduced monthly environmental sanitation exercise, reaffirming their commitment to government efforts aimed at promoting a cleaner and healthier environment.

The resolution was reached on Wednesday during a strategic meeting between union representatives and officials of the Lagos State Government. The meeting was jointly presided over by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, and the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi.

As part of the agreement, transport operators announced that no commercial vehicle will load passengers at motor parks and garages between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. on the last Saturday of every month, in line with the sanitation exercise.

Speaking on behalf of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the State Secretary, Comrade Usman Teslim, assured the government of the union’s total commitment to ensuring the success of the initiative.

Teslim noted that the union’s operational guidelines require it to support government policies in any state or local government where it operates, emphasizing that the directive would be strictly enforced across transport hubs in Lagos.

The renewed sanitation exercise is part of broader efforts by the state government to improve environmental hygiene, reduce waste, and promote public health across the state.
