BREAKING NEWS: Cristiano Ronaldo Rules Out Portugal Retirement, Vows to Continue Competing for National Team
Cristiano Ronaldo has made it clear that he is not retiring from international football, insisting that he remains committed to representing Portugal and competing for the national team.
In a statement addressing the controversy surrounding Portugal’s latest national team camp, Ronaldo explained his version of events and rejected suggestions that his international career is coming to an end.
The Portugal captain said that, following the World Cup, the president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) asked him to reconsider his decision to leave the national team. Ronaldo also said he supported the appointment of the current coach, believing he was the right person for the job.
According to Ronaldo, the coach told him in August that he was a fundamental part of his plans and would feature in both the first and final matches. Ronaldo said he was offered the option of missing away fixtures but refused, stressing that, as captain, he believed he should remain with the team.
The Al Nassr forward also addressed the incident during the match against Norway, claiming that he was asked whether he could play around 30 minutes. He agreed and began warming up at half-time but was ultimately not introduced.
Ronaldo admitted that he was wrong not to greet the supporters after the match and apologised for his actions. However, he said subsequent discussions with the coach did not result in the explanation they had allegedly agreed upon.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner said he felt he had been treated unfairly and maintained that he had never interfered with technical decisions throughout his international career.
“In almost 25 years I have never interfered in a technical decision. But when my word is broken, my place is not there,” Ronaldo said.
Despite the controversy and the possibility of disciplinary action, Ronaldo strongly rejected the idea of a ceremonial farewell from Portugal.
He said that representing his country has always been about competing at the highest level rather than simply receiving a farewell.
Ronaldo also recalled playing for Portugal shortly after the death of his father, saying he remained with the national team because of his commitment to his country.
The veteran forward concluded by making his position clear: once he is fit and completes his suspension, he intends to remain available for Portugal and continue fighting to win.
“If I'm fit, after my suspension, I'll be available, as always, to compete and win for Portugal.”
Ronaldo ended his statement with a firm declaration: “This is the absolute truth.”
His comments are expected to further fuel discussions about his future with the Portuguese national team, but for now, Ronaldo has made one thing clear—he does not consider his international career over.
