NiMet Warns of Increased Meningitis Risk in Northern Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned residents of several northern states in Nigeria to be alert as the dry season may increase the risk of meningitis outbreaks.

In an advisory, the agency listed high-risk states to include Sokoto State, Zamfara State, Kebbi State, Katsina State, Kano State, Jigawa State, Adamawa State, Gombe State, Bauchi State, Yobe State and Borno State.

NiMet explained that the hot, dry, and dusty conditions common during the dry season in northern Nigeria create an environment that increases the spread of meningitis, particularly in densely populated communities.

Meningitis is commonly caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis and spreads through respiratory droplets and close contact with infected individuals.

Health experts say common symptoms of the disease include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, vomiting, and sensitivity to light. If not treated early, meningitis can lead to serious complications and even death.

The agency urged residents in the affected states to take preventive measures, including vaccination, maintaining proper hygiene, and ensuring adequate ventilation in homes, schools, and public places.

NiMet also advised individuals who experience symptoms associated with meningitis to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility. 🩺⚠️
