Mali Defence Minister General Sadio Camara Killed in Coordinated Nationwide Attacks

Sadio Camara, Mali’s Defence Minister and one of the most influential figures in the country’s military led government, has reportedly been killed following coordinated attacks on military installations across the country.

Sources cited by Al Jazeera said the attacks targeted several strategic military sites, including Camara’s residence in Kati, a key military stronghold near the capital, Bamako.

The wave of assaults, reportedly carried out by armed groups including al-Qaeda-linked fighters and Tuareg separatists, also hit northern cities such as Gao and Kidal, marking one of the most coordinated attacks in the country in recent years.

General Camara was a central figure in Mali’s military administration and a close ally of junta leader Assimi Goïta. His reported killing is expected to have major implications for the country’s political and security landscape.

The attacks underscore the deepening instability in Mali, where armed insurgencies and separatist movements have continued to challenge state authority despite ongoing military operations.

Authorities in Mali are yet to issue a full official statement on the incident as investigations continue.
