BREAKING: Lionel Messi Retires From International Football After 21-Year Argentina Career

Argentina football legend Lionel Messi has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an extraordinary 21-year career with the national team to an end.

The 39-year-old Inter Miami forward confirmed his decision on Monday, August 31, 2026, in an emotional statement published on social media.

Messi said the decision was painful but that he believes the time has come to close the chapter of his international career and allow a new generation of Argentine players to emerge. 

“It was a decision that hurt and still hurts deep in my soul, but I understand that it is the right time.”

Messi made his senior debut for Argentina in 2005 and went on to become the country's most-capped player and leading goalscorer. He leaves the national team with 207 appearances and 125 goals. 

A Career That Changed Argentina's Football History

For years, Messi endured immense pressure while wearing the famous Argentina shirt. His early international career included painful defeats, including the 2014 FIFA World Cup final against Germany and Copa América final losses.

However, the story eventually changed dramatically.

Messi led Argentina to victory at the 2021 Copa América, before reaching the pinnacle of international football by captaining the country to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title in Qatar. Argentina subsequently won another Copa América in 2024. 

His final international tournament came at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Argentina reached the final but suffered a 1–0 defeat to Spain. That match ultimately became Messi's final appearance for the national team.

The retirement announcement comes weeks after the death of Messi's father, Jorge Messi, who died in August at the age of 68.

Messi had previously indicated that his father's death had caused him to seriously reconsider how much longer he would continue playing football. He later said the loss strengthened his conviction that retirement from international duty was the right decision.

Messi's retirement marks the end of one of the most celebrated international careers in modern football.

He leaves Argentina having won the World Cup, two Copa América titles and numerous individual honours, while establishing himself as one of the greatest players ever to represent a national team.
