Governor Inuwa Approves N148.76m Monthly Subvention Increase for Gombe State University

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, has approved an additional N148.762 million monthly subvention for Gombe State University to support the implementation of the Enhanced Salary Structure, known as the Consolidated Academic Tool Allowance (CATA).

The approval, which takes effect from October 2026, is part of measures by the state government to address concerns arising from the 2025 Federal Government–ASUU agreement and improve staff welfare at the institution.

The Secretary to the Gombe State Government, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, who announced the approval, said the additional funding represents a 56 per cent increase in the university’s monthly subvention.

He explained that the increase would enable the university to meet its financial obligations to staff and make adequate budgetary provisions for the implementation of the new salary structure in the 2026 Supplementary Budget, expected to be considered by the Gombe State House of Assembly in September.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya has also directed the university management to immediately begin the necessary processes for the payment of outstanding CATA arrears.

Beyond CATA, the governor directed the university management to explore internal measures for the gradual settlement of other outstanding staff obligations, including arrears of the 25 per cent and 35 per cent wage awards, minimum wage and Earned Academic Allowances.

The state government said the obligations would be addressed in phases, while maintaining the financial sustainability of the university and ensuring that academic activities continue without disruption.

In another development, the Gombe State House of Assembly has passed legislation establishing the Gombe State Education Trust Fund, which is expected to commence operations in October 2026.

The fund is designed to provide a sustainable financing framework for education in the state, particularly Gombe State University and other state-owned tertiary institutions.

According to the government, the initiative will strengthen funding for recurrent and developmental needs, while creating a more dependable mechanism for addressing staff welfare and institutional requirements.

The government has consequently urged ASUU to acknowledge the steps already taken and the assurances provided by the administration, describing them as evidence of its commitment to resolving the concerns of academic and non-academic staff unions.

The Inuwa Yahaya administration reaffirmed its commitment to working with ASUU, university management and other stakeholders to maintain industrial harmony and safeguard the stability and continued development of Gombe State University.
