Just In: Mikel Obi Laments Unfulfilled AFCON Reward, Questions Return to NFF

Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has expressed disappointment over what he says is the unfulfilled promise of a plot of land awarded to members of Nigeria’s victorious 2013 Africa Cup of Nations squad by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Speaking during a recent interview, Mikel revealed that more than a decade after the historic triumph, he has yet to take possession of the land allegedly allocated to him. “The plot of land President Goodluck Jonathan gave me after we won AFCON… till today I still don’t know where it is,” the former Chelsea midfielder said.

Mikel added that the experience has contributed to his reluctance to accept invitations to work with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), noting that he finds it difficult to collaborate with officials while past commitments to players remain unresolved. 

His remarks have reignited public debate over the treatment of former national team stars and the need for greater accountability in the administration of Nigerian football. Nigeria won the 2013 AFCON title in South Africa, ending a 19-year wait for continental glory.
