Security Alert: Kebbi Ambush Claims Nine Soldiers

At least nine Nigerian soldiers have been killed and several others injured following a deadly attack by gunmen in Kebbi State, according to a report by Reuters.

The attack reportedly occurred late Tuesday in Shanga district, where troops were on routine patrol near their military base when they came under heavy assault from armed assailants. Security sources described the нападение as sudden and well-coordinated, leaving multiple soldiers dead and others wounded.

Two military sources, alongside a local resident, confirmed that the attackers ambushed the troops, suggesting prior knowledge of their movement. The injured personnel are said to be receiving medical attention, although details about their condition remain unclear at this time.

Initial intelligence reports indicate that the attackers are suspected to be members of the Lakurawa militant group, a group believed to be active within the northwestern region and known for targeting security operatives and local communities.

Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, confirmed the incident after visiting some of the injured soldiers. However, he did not officially disclose the number of casualties.

Kebbi State shares borders with Benin and Niger, making it a strategic but vulnerable location. The region has, in recent years, witnessed increasing activities of armed groups, including kidnapping gangs and militant elements whose operations have gradually expanded across northwestern Nigeria.

Security analysts warn that the growing overlap between banditry and militant insurgency in the region poses a serious threat to national stability, especially as these groups become more organized and better armed.

The attack once again highlights the persistent security challenges facing the administration of President Bola Tinubu, nearly three years after assuming office. Despite ongoing military operations and government interventions, many communities in northern Nigeria continue to experience attacks and insecurity.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Army has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. However, military operations are expected to intensify in the area as authorities work to track down those responsible.

Residents in nearby communities have reportedly been gripped by fear following the attack, with calls for increased security presence and more proactive measures to protect lives and property.

Orbit News 24 will continue to monitor this developing story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
