Seven Killed, Scores Displaced as Farmer-Herder Clash Ravages Bauchi Communities

At least seven people have been confirmed dead and about 50 local huts destroyed following a violent clash between farmers and herders in Lanzai and Dosho communities of Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The deadly confrontation, which has left several families displaced and properties worth millions of naira destroyed, is the latest in a series of recurring conflicts between farming and pastoral communities in parts of northern Nigeria.

According to the Bauchi State Police Command, the crisis erupted after suspected herders allegedly attacked a group of farmers working on their farmlands on the outskirts of Lanzai community. The incident reportedly heightened tensions in the area and triggered a chain of retaliatory attacks between the two groups.

Speaking on the development, the spokesperson of the command, SP Nafiu Habib, said police received a distress call regarding the violence and immediately mobilised security personnel to the affected communities.

He explained that preliminary investigations indicated that the initial attack led to reprisals by aggrieved youths, resulting in the destruction of homes and other properties. During the unrest, about 50 traditional huts in Dosho village were set ablaze, forcing many residents to flee for safety.

The police spokesman confirmed that seven people lost their lives in the clash, while six others sustained various injuries. The injured victims were evacuated to nearby health facilities, where they are receiving treatment.

Residents of the affected communities described the incident as one of the worst outbreaks of violence witnessed in recent times, with many families losing their homes, food supplies, livestock and personal belongings in the inferno that followed the attacks.

Security agencies, including police personnel and other operatives, have since been deployed to the area to restore peace and prevent further breakdown of law and order. Authorities said patrols have been intensified across the affected communities and neighbouring settlements to forestall possible retaliatory attacks.

The Bauchi State Police Command assured residents that the situation has largely been brought under control, while efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest individuals involved in the violence.

The command urged community leaders, farmers and herders to remain calm and embrace dialogue as a means of resolving disputes, warning against taking the law into their own hands.

Farmer-herder conflicts have remained a major security challenge in several parts of Nigeria, often arising from disputes over land use, grazing routes, crop destruction and access to water resources. Such clashes frequently result in loss of lives, displacement of residents and destruction of property.

Authorities in Bauchi State have pledged to work with traditional rulers, community leaders and security agencies to ensure lasting peace in the affected communities and prevent a recurrence of the violence.
