Suspected Bomb Explosion Rocks Lagos Market, Triggers Panic Among Traders

Lagos, Nigeria — Panic and confusion swept through the bustling Shoe Materials Market in the Mushin area of Lagos State on Monday following a suspected bomb explosion that shook the commercial hub and forced traders and customers to flee for safety.

The explosion, believed to have been caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), reportedly occurred beneath a vehicle parked within the market premises. The loud blast sent shockwaves through the area, drawing the attention of residents and business owners while causing temporary disruption to commercial activities.

Eyewitnesses said the explosion created widespread fear as traders abandoned their shops and rushed out of the market, uncertain about the cause of the incident and concerned about the possibility of additional explosions.

Security agencies responded swiftly to the emergency. Personnel of the Lagos State Police Command, including officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, were deployed to the scene to assess the situation, secure the area, and conduct a thorough search for any other explosive materials.

The police subsequently cordoned off parts of the market to allow security experts carry out investigations and ensure the safety of residents and traders. Emergency responders were also mobilised to provide assistance and evaluate any potential casualties or damage resulting from the blast.

Speaking during an inspection visit to the scene, the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, assured members of the public that the situation had been brought under control. He urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could heighten tension.

According to the police commissioner, preliminary findings indicated that the explosion may have been caused by an Improvised Explosive Device concealed beneath a vehicle. However, he stressed that investigations were ongoing and that authorities would provide further details once forensic examinations were completed.

"We are working diligently to determine the source of the explosive device, those responsible, and the circumstances surrounding the incident. The safety of residents remains our top priority," he said.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not released an official figure regarding casualties or the extent of property damage. Security personnel remained stationed around the market, while investigators continued gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.

The incident has sparked concern among traders and residents, many of whom called for tighter security measures in major markets and public places across Lagos to prevent similar occurrences.

Authorities have advised members of the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious objects, vehicles, or activities to security agencies. The police also reassured residents that efforts were being intensified to maintain public safety and prevent any further security threats.

The suspected bomb explosion is the latest security incident to raise concerns about public safety in densely populated commercial centres, as authorities continue investigations to establish the motive behind the blast and identify those responsible.
