BREAKING: Former Super Eagles Coach Festus Onigbinde Passes Away

Former head coach of the Nigeria national football team, popularly known as the Super Eagles, Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, has passed away.

The news of his death was confirmed on Friday by members of his family, who described the late football tactician as a respected sports administrator, mentor, and community leader whose contributions to Nigerian football will always be remembered.

Onigbinde, fondly called “Baba Eko” in Nigerian football circles, was widely regarded as one of the most experienced and influential coaches in the country’s football history. Throughout his career, he played a significant role in shaping Nigerian football both at the national and club levels.

The late coach first gained national prominence when he managed the Super Eagles during the 1984 African Cup of Nations, where Nigeria finished as runners-up. His tactical knowledge and calm leadership earned him admiration across the continent.

Years later, he returned to lead the national team again, guiding Nigeria to the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea and Japan. Although the team did not progress beyond the group stage, his leadership during the qualification campaign was widely acknowledged.

Beyond the national team, Onigbinde also made remarkable contributions at the club level and in sports administration. He served as a technical director and adviser to several football institutions and remained actively involved in developing grassroots football long after his coaching career.
