Tinubu Pledges to Make Abuja a Capital Worthy of Nigeria’s Growing Population, Commissions Major Road Project

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to transforming the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) into a modern capital city that reflects Nigeria's growing population, economic aspirations, and national identity.

The President made the pledge on Wednesday during the commissioning of the completed Arterial Road N5, also known as Obafemi Awolowo Way, which links Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III in the Dape District of Abuja.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu described infrastructure development as a key indicator of national progress and government effectiveness, stressing that strategic investments in roads and transportation networks remain central to his administration's development agenda.

He said improved connectivity across the FCT would reduce transportation costs, stimulate economic activities, attract investments, and create employment opportunities for residents.

“Infrastructure is the measure by which every civilised nation announces its seriousness. No capital can carry the weight of national ambition if its arteries are blocked by neglect, excuses and abandoned promises,” the President stated.

Tinubu assured Nigerians that his administration would continue investing in critical infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing connectivity and restoring public confidence in governance.

According to him, the completion of the N5 Road project demonstrates the government's determination to end the era of abandoned projects and prolonged construction delays.

“There has been no break, no pause and no retreat in the construction and rehabilitation of the roads we inherited. That is why we have ended the tradition of abandoned projects and restored faith in the power of government to finish what it starts,” he said.

The President noted that the road project was conceived, funded, and completed under the current administration after it was awarded to Julius Berger in October 2024 with a 15-month completion timeline.

He commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for driving infrastructure development across Abuja and praised the contractor for delivering the project according to schedule.

“The Honourable Minister has shown what happens when political will meets accountability. We fund projects to see results, not to hear explanations for failure,” Tinubu added.

The President described the newly commissioned road as a critical economic asset that would ease traffic congestion, improve mobility, and enhance access to key districts, including Dape, Karmo, Gwarinpa I, Kado, Idu, and Mbora, as well as the Idu Industrial District.

He noted that the project aligns with the Abuja Master Plan and addresses longstanding traffic challenges around Life Camp Junction, one of the city's major congestion points.

Tinubu, however, urged residents and businesses benefiting from the infrastructure to fulfill their tax and land-related obligations to enable the FCT Administration to undertake more development projects.

He also called on traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to protect public infrastructure from vandalism.

Speaking at the event, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike praised President Tinubu for supporting unprecedented infrastructure development across Abuja and its satellite communities, describing the projects as visible evidence of the administration's Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Minister of State for FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmud, also commended the President and Vice President for their commitment to delivering people-oriented projects across the territory.

Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Administration (FCDA), Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, said the completion of the road would significantly improve transportation and connectivity between communities within the FCT.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by federal lawmakers, senior government officials, and top members of the FCT administration.
