FG Approves ₦550 Billion to Support Smallholder Farmers, Boost Food Production

The Federal Government has committed ₦550 billion through the Bank of Agriculture (BoA) to support smallholder farmers and strengthen agricultural production across Nigeria.

The intervention is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to expand access to agricultural financing, increase food production and help address the challenges confronting farmers, particularly access to affordable credit.

Reports indicate that the funding is being deployed under the government’s Renewed Hope Smallholder Support Programme, with the Bank of Agriculture playing a central role in providing financing to farmers.

The initiative is expected to provide greater financial support to smallholder farmers who often struggle to obtain affordable loans from conventional financial institutions because of limited collateral and other lending requirements.

Focus on Food Production

The ₦550 billion intervention is also aimed at supporting Nigeria’s broader food-security objectives by enabling farmers to obtain the resources required for agricultural activities.

According to reports, the funding includes provisions for technology-driven financing for smallholder farmers as well as measures designed to help manage price risks in the agricultural sector.

The government’s intervention comes amid continuing efforts to increase domestic food production and reduce pressures associated with food prices.

Why the Intervention Matters

Smallholder farmers account for a significant portion of agricultural activity in Nigeria, but many face persistent challenges including limited access to credit, high input costs, inadequate storage facilities and market-related difficulties.

By increasing access to financing through the Bank of Agriculture, the Federal Government hopes to enable more farmers to expand their operations, acquire inputs and improve productivity.

The intervention is also expected to strengthen the connection between farmers and formal agricultural financing, potentially allowing more producers to participate in structured agricultural value chains.

Supporting Farmers and Food Security

The government has increasingly placed agriculture and food security among its key economic priorities, particularly as Nigeria seeks to improve domestic production and reduce vulnerability to fluctuations in food prices.

The ₦550 billion commitment therefore represents a major financial intervention in the agricultural sector, with the potential to benefit farmers and contribute to the availability of food across the country.

However, the effectiveness of the programme will ultimately depend on transparent implementation, timely access to financing and ensuring that the intended beneficiaries—particularly genuine smallholder farmers—can access the support.

The Federal Government is expected to continue working through relevant agricultural institutions to ensure that the intervention contributes to increased production, improved farmer incomes and greater food security.

The initiative underscores the government’s renewed emphasis on agriculture as a key component of Nigeria’s economic development and food-security strategy.
