Tinubu Extends Customs CG Adeniyi’s Tenure by Six Months

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, allowing him to remain in office until February 2027.

Adeniyi's current tenure was initially scheduled to end on August 1, 2026. However, the Presidency said the extension was granted to enable him to consolidate ongoing reforms, particularly the implementation of the National Single Window project, and facilitate a smooth leadership transition within the Customs Service.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the extension will also provide an opportunity for Adeniyi to work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to conclude key administrative processes within the service.

During the extension period, the Comptroller-General is expected to oversee the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs, while ensuring the compulsory retirement of officers who have attained the age of 60 or completed 35 years in service.

Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s and steadily rose through the ranks of the organisation.

His career progression saw him become Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023. President Tinubu later appointed him as Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023.

The Presidency expressed confidence that the tenure extension would help sustain ongoing reforms and strengthen institutional continuity within the Nigeria Customs Service.
