Tension in Rivers State as Gunmen Target Rotimi Amaechi’s Convoy, Torch African Democratic Congress Office
By Orbit News 24
Gunmen suspected to be political thugs on Friday attacked the convoy of former Rivers State governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, in Rivers State after reportedly setting fire to an office of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in his hometown.
The incident occurred along the road between Ubima and Omuanwa in Ikwerre Local Government Area as Amaechi travelled to his community for his electronic registration as a member of the ADC.
Reports indicate that the attackers had earlier mounted roadblocks to prevent buses carrying ADC supporters from entering the community. On Thursday night, the suspected thugs allegedly set the ward office of the party in Ubima ablaze before the former governor’s arrival.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen opened fire and attempted to block Amaechi’s motorcade, forcing security personnel attached to the convoy to engage the attackers in a gun duel. The security team reportedly overpowered the assailants, who later fled into nearby bushes.
The attack also left parts of the community in panic, with reports that the gate of Amaechi’s family house was riddled with bullets during the violence.
Addressing supporters after the incident, Amaechi urged party members to remain calm and avoid retaliation, while calling on security agencies to investigate the attack and bring those responsible to justice.
He also commended security agencies, including the police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), for their swift response in preventing further escalation.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not announced any arrests, while investigations into the attack and the burning of the ADC office are ongoing.
