Supreme Court Voids Ibadan PDP Convention, Deals Blow to Turaki-Led Faction

Nigeria’s Supreme Court has nullified the disputed national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party held in Ibadan, Oyo State, dealing a major setback to the faction led by Taminu Turaki. The apex court’s decision effectively invalidates the leadership structure that emerged from the November 15–16, 2025 convention.  

The Ibadan convention had produced Turaki as factional national chairman amid deepening internal divisions in the party. However, the process had been challenged in court over alleged violations of subsisting court orders and the party’s constitutional procedures. Lower courts had earlier ruled against the convention, with the Court of Appeal affirming that the gathering failed to meet legal requirements.  

The Supreme Court’s verdict now strengthens the position of the caretaker leadership headed by Mohammed Abdulrahman, which had insisted the Ibadan convention was unlawful.

Political observers say the judgment could reshape the PDP’s internal power balance ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially as rival blocs backed by influential figures, including Nyesom Wike and Seyi Makinde, continue to battle for control of the party.
