Senate Approves Increase in Police Trust Fund Allocation from Federation Account

Abuja, Nigeria 🇳🇬 June 25, 2026

The Senate has approved an increase in the allocation to the Nigeria Police Trust Fund from the Federation Account, raising it from 0.5 per cent to 1 per cent in a move aimed at strengthening funding for policing and internal security operations across the country.

The approval followed the consideration and passage of amendments to the Nigeria Police Trust Fund Act by the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

Lawmakers said the increase would provide additional resources needed to improve the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force, enhance personnel welfare, and support the procurement of modern equipment and technology for effective law enforcement.

The Police Trust Fund was established to serve as a special intervention mechanism for the training, equipping, and provision of critical infrastructure for the police. The fund is financed through allocations from the Federation Account as well as contributions from private sector organizations and development partners.

Senators who supported the amendment argued that rising security challenges across the country require increased investment in policing, intelligence gathering, logistics, and crime prevention initiatives.

According to the lawmakers, the additional funding is expected to help address longstanding challenges facing the police, including inadequate operational equipment, insufficient training facilities, and limited mobility for officers deployed across various parts of the country.

The Senate noted that improving the capacity of the police remains critical to tackling criminal activities, protecting lives and property, and strengthening public confidence in the nation's security architecture.

Security experts have welcomed the development, describing it as a significant step toward enhancing the effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force. However, they also stressed the need for transparency, accountability, and proper oversight in the management of the increased funds to ensure they achieve their intended objectives.

The amendment is expected to proceed through the remaining legislative processes before implementation.

The latest move reflects ongoing efforts by the Federal Government and the National Assembly to strengthen security institutions and improve the country's ability to respond to emerging security threats.
