Security Forces Rescue 13 Kidnap Victims in Benue, Arrest Suspects

Security operatives have rescued 13 kidnapped passengers abducted along the Makurdi–Otukpo road in Benue State, bringing a successful end to a coordinated rescue mission.

The victims were among travellers attacked by gunmen on April 15, 2026, while journeying in a commercial vehicle. The incident had sparked widespread concern, particularly as some of the passengers were reportedly students heading to sit for the ongoing UTME examinations.

Confirming the development, police authorities in Benue State disclosed that the operation involved joint efforts by multiple security agencies, leading to the safe recovery of all remaining captives. The rescued victims are expected to undergo medical evaluation and debriefing.

Earlier reports indicated that some victims had been freed in a prior operation, leaving 13 still in captivity before the final rescue mission. Security forces intensified efforts, combing surrounding forest areas where the victims were believed to be held.

Authorities also confirmed the arrest of several suspects linked to the abduction, with investigations ongoing to dismantle the criminal network responsible.

While some of the rescued individuals sustained minor injuries, officials say they are in stable condition.

The successful operation has brought relief to affected families and residents, amid renewed calls for stronger security presence along major highways in the region to curb rising cases of kidnapping.
