Nigerian Army Strengthens Civil-Military Ties with Wukari Recreational Centre Project

The Nigerian Army has reinforced its commitment to civil-military cooperation and community development with the commissioning of the newly renovated Atoshi Recreational Centre in Wukari, Taraba State.

The project, commissioned on Saturday, April 11, 2026, by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, was executed under the Special Civil-Military Cooperation initiative of the Army Headquarters Garrison. The COAS was represented at the event by the Force Commander, Operation WHIRL STROKE, Major General Moses Gara.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Army Chief said the intervention reflects the Nigerian Army’s strategic approach to strengthening public trust and enhancing collaboration with host communities as part of efforts to improve national security. He noted that community support remains vital in addressing evolving security challenges across the country.

He commended the people of Wukari for their cooperation and acknowledged the town’s socio-economic importance, adding that the upgraded facility would serve as a centre for youth engagement, recreation, and social integration.

The COAS further highlighted that similar initiatives are ongoing nationwide, targeting critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure, all aimed at fostering stability and development. He also applauded the Commander, Army Headquarters Garrison, Major General Maxwell Dangana, for spearheading the project, urging the community to safeguard and maintain the facility.

Also speaking, the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Major General Etsu-Ndagi, described the intervention projects as impactful and timely, noting that they have delivered quick and tangible benefits in several communities. He called for sustained partnership between the military and civilians in tackling security issues.

In his remarks, Major General Maxwell Dangana stated that the centre, originally constructed in 1990, was renovated to strengthen mutual trust and promote unity between the Nigerian Army and the people. He appreciated the COAS for approving the initiative.

The Executive Chairman of Wukari Local Government Area, Honourable Bala Useni, lauded the Nigerian Army for the project, describing it as a boost to youth development and community cohesion. He urged residents to continue supporting security agencies through information sharing and cooperation.

The commissioning ceremony attracted senior military officers, heads of security agencies, local government officials from Wukari, Takum, Donga, and Ibi, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders.

The renovated Atoshi Recreational Centre features modern sporting facilities and improved surroundings designed to enhance community interaction and promote peaceful coexistence.
