Gombe Ranks 2nd Nationwide in Fiscal Transparency Index

Gombe State has achieved a significant milestone in public sector governance, emerging second nationwide in the 2025 Subnational Audit Efficacy (SAE) Index released by the Paradigm Leadership Support Initiative (PLSI).

The ranking highlights Gombe as one of Nigeria’s top-performing states in public finance oversight, with a score of 68 percent—marking a remarkable rise from its previous 16th position in the last assessment.

PLSI, a non-profit organization established in 2016 to promote accountability and citizen participation in public audit processes, noted that Gombe demonstrated strong progress in strengthening the independence of its audit system.

According to the report, the state has effectively implemented legal provisions that ensure the Office of the Auditor-General receives funding directly from the Consolidated Revenue Fund, granting it financial autonomy and reducing reliance on the executive arm of government.

The assessment also recorded improvements in both state and local government audit systems, which contributed 55 percent and 13 percent respectively to the overall score.

Analysts say the state’s steady rise in the index since 2019 reflects the impact of governance reforms introduced by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, aimed at enhancing transparency, efficient resource management, and results-driven public service.

Reacting to the development, the Gombe State Government reaffirmed its commitment to consolidating the gains through stronger institutions, deeper transparency reforms, and prudent fiscal management.

In a statement signed by the Director-General of Press Affairs, Ismaila Uba Misilli, the government said the recognition reinforces Gombe’s growing reputation as a model for accountability and responsible governance in Nigeria.

The statement added that the state will continue to ensure that public resources are translated into measurable development outcomes for its citizens, while sustaining its momentum in good governance and institutional excellence.
