Gombe Moves to Modernise Livestock Sector with AI Breeding Centre, Control Posts

The Gombe State Government has begun the process for the construction of an ultramodern Artificial Insemination and Breed Multiplication Centre as well as six livestock control posts strategically positioned along major international stock routes across the state.

The projects, under the Gombe State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, are part of efforts by the administration of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya to improve livestock production, curb cattle rustling, reduce farmer-herder conflicts, and strengthen disease surveillance mechanisms.

Speaking during the bidding exercise, the Project Coordinator of Gombe L-PRES, Professor Usman Bello Abubakar, described the initiative as a significant step towards transforming the livestock sector through modern technology and strategic investment.

He stated that the Artificial Insemination Centre would provide livestock farmers with access to improved breeds, advanced breeding technologies, and modern veterinary support services aimed at boosting cattle quality and productivity across the state.

According to him, the facility will also serve as a centre for practical research, innovation, and training for students, researchers, and livestock professionals, particularly through collaboration with academic institutions.

“The centre will not only support livestock farmers with modern breeding services, but will also serve as a research and training hub for students and agricultural professionals. This is expected to strengthen the livestock value chain and contribute significantly to the economic development of Gombe State,” he said.

Professor Abubakar further explained that the six livestock rescue and control posts are designed to monitor livestock movement, improve security along stock routes, and reduce recurring clashes between farmers and herders, especially during farming and harvest seasons.

He added that the control posts would also enhance disease monitoring and promote peaceful coexistence among communities.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperatives, Engr. Ahmad Guli, commended the transparent and professional conduct of the bidding process.

He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to implementing the projects in accordance with international standards and best practices.

According to him, agriculture remains one of the key priorities of the current administration, with continued investments aimed at boosting food production, livestock development, and economic growth.

“We are impressed with the level of openness and compliance demonstrated during the bidding process. Government will continue to provide the necessary support to ensure the smooth execution of these projects for the benefit of the people of Gombe State,” he said.

In his remarks, Dr. Zubairu Sulaiman of Gombe State University praised the decision to site the Artificial Insemination Centre within the university’s Faculty of Agriculture, describing it as a major boost for research and practical learning.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ibrahim Abubakar of Horizon Interlinks Global Resource Limited, speaking on behalf of participating firms, applauded the L-PRES management team for ensuring a fair and credible bidding exercise.

Nine companies participated in the exercise, while successful bidders are expected to emerge after due evaluation in line with World Bank procurement guidelines.
