Floods and Neglect: The Urgent Need to Fix Disaster Management in Northeast Nigeria

Recurring floods across Northeast Nigeria have continued to devastate communities in Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, and Bauchi States, raising growing concerns over disaster preparedness and response systems in the region.

Each rainy season, homes are submerged, farmlands destroyed, and thousands of families displaced, often forced into temporary shelters with limited access to basic needs. For many residents, the floods have become a predictable crisis, yet little progress appears to have been made in preventing them.

Experts attribute the worsening situation to poor drainage systems, blocked waterways, and unregulated urban development. In many areas, critical infrastructure needed to manage flooding is either inadequate or completely absent.

Although emergency agencies and humanitarian groups typically respond with relief materials such as food and clothing, affected communities say assistance rarely goes beyond the immediate aftermath. Many victims are left to rebuild their lives without structured support, compensation, or long-term recovery plans.

There are also increasing concerns about the effectiveness of disaster management institutions. Critics argue that agencies are often more visible during emergencies than in preventive planning, with limited investment in early warning systems, risk awareness, and community preparedness.

In addition, analysts have raised questions about transparency and accountability in the management of funds allocated for disaster response. They warn that without proper monitoring, resources meant for victims may not achieve their intended impact.

Stakeholders are now calling for a shift from reactive responses to proactive solutions. Recommended measures include investment in flood control infrastructure, enforcement of environmental laws, improved early warning systems, and greater community participation in disaster planning.

They emphasize that flooding in Northeast Nigeria is no longer just a natural occurrence, but a reflection of broader governance and planning challenges that require urgent attention.
