FG Charges Ex-Minister Sylva, Retired General, Others with Treason Over Alleged Coup Plot

Abuja, Nigeria - 22 April, 2026

The Federal Government has filed treason and terrorism charges against former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, alongside a retired military general and several others over an alleged plot to overthrow the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to court documents filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, the defendants are facing a 13-count charge bordering on treason, conspiracy, terrorism financing, and failure to report a planned coup.

Among those named in the charge is retired Major General Mohammed Ibrahim Gana, as well as other individuals, including a serving police officer and civilians.

The Federal Government alleges that the accused persons conspired at various times in 2025 to destabilize the country and unlawfully remove the current government. Prosecutors claim the actions amount to “levying war against the state,” a serious offence under Nigerian law.

Sources indicate that some of the suspects are expected to be arraigned in Abuja, while at least one of the accused is reportedly not yet in custody.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from Timipre Sylva regarding the allegations.

Legal experts note that the charges remain allegations, and the accused persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
