FCT Minister Wike Orders Probe Into Abuja Building Collapse, Seals Premises

Abuja, Nigeria - 18 May, 2026

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the building collapse that occurred in the Gudu area of Abuja and reportedly claimed five lives.

The minister gave the directive on Monday following the tragic incident, instructing relevant authorities to immediately seal off the affected premises pending the outcome of investigations.

According to reports, emergency responders and officials of the FCT Emergency Management Department swiftly moved to the scene for rescue and recovery operations after the structure collapsed.

Wike described the incident as unfortunate and stressed the need for strict compliance with building regulations and safety standards across the FCT. He warned that any individual or developer found culpable would face the full weight of the law.

The minister further directed development control officials and other relevant agencies to intensify monitoring of construction projects within Abuja to prevent future occurrences.

The collapse has once again sparked concerns over the increasing cases of structural failures in parts of the nation’s capital, with residents calling for stronger enforcement of building approvals and safety measures.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities were yet to officially disclose the identities of the victims, while investigations into the cause of the collapse were ongoing.
