2027 Presidency: Jonathan Hints at Return, Says He Will “Consult Widely” Before Decision

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has stirred fresh political conversations ahead of the 2027 general election after revealing that he would “consult widely” before deciding whether to contest for Nigeria’s highest office once again.

Jonathan made the statement on Thursday in Abuja while addressing a crowd of supporters and youth groups who visited his office to urge him to join the 2027 presidential race.

Responding to the growing calls for his return to active politics, the former president said contesting for the presidency was a serious national responsibility that required careful consideration and broad consultation with stakeholders across the country.

“You are asking me to come and contest the next election. Presidential race is not a computer game. But I’ve heard you and I’ll consult widely,” Jonathan said.

The former president, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, stressed the importance of patriotism, peace, and credible elections in strengthening democracy and national unity.

According to him, peaceful and transparent elections remain essential for encouraging competent and patriotic citizens to participate in governance.

“The key thing we need in this country is peace. Young people must continue to advocate for peaceful and credible elections because if elections are not credible, good citizens will not want to get involved in politics,” he added.

Jonathan also urged Nigerian youths to become more actively involved in the democratic process, particularly by registering to vote and participating in elections rather than remaining passive observers.

Drawing from his experience as an international election observer in several African countries, the former president expressed concern over voter apathy in Nigeria and called for greater civic engagement among young Nigerians.

The supporters, believed to be members of different political and civic groups, described Jonathan as a leader capable of uniting the country and restoring confidence in governance amid current economic and political challenges.

Although Jonathan stopped short of officially declaring his ambition, his comments have already intensified speculations about a possible comeback bid ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Political observers believe his statement marks one of his strongest indications yet that he may be considering a return to frontline politics.
