Kano Deputy Governor Gwarzo Steps Down Amid Impeachment Pressure and Political Realignment

Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has officially resigned from his position as Deputy Governor of Kano State, bringing a dramatic twist to the state’s ongoing political tensions.

The resignation was confirmed on Friday evening by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Shuaibu, who briefed journalists on the development. The Kwankwasiyya Movement also issued a statement, describing the decision as one made in the interest of peace, stability, and the smooth running of government affairs.

Gwarzo’s exit comes in the wake of sustained political friction triggered by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s recent defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the All Progressives Congress. While the governor switched allegiance, Gwarzo remained aligned with the NNPP and its leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The political divide placed the deputy governor under increasing pressure, including widespread calls for his resignation and formal impeachment proceedings initiated by the Kano State House of Assembly. Lawmakers had issued an impeachment notice supported by 38 out of 40 members, citing allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. A Federal High Court had also declined Gwarzo’s attempt to stop the impeachment process.

Despite the circumstances surrounding his exit, the Kwankwasiyya Movement emphasized that the resignation should not be seen as an admission of wrongdoing, maintaining that Gwarzo remains innocent of all allegations.

There are indications that the former deputy governor may now focus on consolidating the movement’s influence and could align with the African Democratic Congress ahead of future political developments.

As of press time, Governor Yusuf has yet to release an official statement regarding the resignation, leaving room for further developments in the unfolding political situation in Kano State.
