APC Sets Conditions for Consensus, Insists on Direct Primaries in Ekiti

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared that it will adopt direct primaries for the selection of its candidates in Ekiti State if efforts to reach a consensus among aspirants fail.

The party leadership made this known during consultations with stakeholders and aspirants ahead of the forthcoming primaries, stressing that consensus remains an option only when it reflects the genuine agreement of all parties involved.

According to sources within the party, APC is committed to ensuring a transparent and credible process that allows members at the grassroots to actively participate in candidate selection. The leadership emphasized that direct primaries, which involve all registered party members, will serve as the fallback option where consensus cannot be achieved.

Party officials noted that while consensus candidacy can help reduce internal conflict and foster unity, it must not be imposed on aspirants. Instead, it should emerge through mutual understanding and voluntary withdrawal by contestants in favor of a widely accepted candidate.

“The party is not against consensus, but it must be a product of agreement by all aspirants. Where this is not possible, we will proceed with direct primaries to give every member a voice,” a party insider stated.

The development comes amid heightened political activities in Ekiti State, with several aspirants already positioning themselves for the party’s ticket. Analysts say the APC’s stance is aimed at preventing disputes and legal battles that often arise from controversial primary elections.

Stakeholders have urged aspirants to conduct their campaigns peacefully and prioritize the unity of the party, warning that internal divisions could weaken its chances in the general elections.
