Troops Crush ISWAP Offensive in Yobe, Over 50 Terrorists Killed as Soldiers Defend Buni Gari Base
Troops of the Joint Task Force (North-East) under Operation HADIN KAI have recorded another major victory against insurgents after successfully repelling a coordinated large-scale attack by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on military formations in Buni Gari, Yobe State.
The attack, which took place in the early hours of Friday, May 8, 2026, targeted the Headquarters of the 27 Brigade and the Buni Gari military checkpoint in what security sources described as a well-planned offensive aimed at breaching the military positions and causing significant destruction.
According to military sources, the terrorists stormed the area in large numbers and engaged troops in an intense gun battle that lasted for hours. However, the soldiers, backed by reinforcements and superior tactical coordination, mounted a fierce resistance that forced the attackers to retreat.
At the end of the operation, more than 50 terrorists were reportedly killed, while several others escaped with gunshot wounds into nearby bushes.
Security sources revealed that troops recovered a cache of arms, ammunition, and other combat equipment abandoned by the fleeing insurgents. Clearance and pursuit operations were immediately launched to track down the escaped fighters and prevent regrouping.
Despite the successful operation, the military suffered casualties, as two gallant soldiers lost their lives while defending the base against the insurgents’ assault.
Military authorities praised the bravery, professionalism, and sacrifice of the troops, noting that their resilience prevented what could have been a major security setback in the area.
Buni Gari, located along the strategic Maiduguri-Damaturu highway, has remained a flashpoint in the fight against insurgency due to its strategic importance and proximity to terrorist operational routes.
The latest victory is seen as a major boost to ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the North-East, as Operation HADIN KAI continues its aggressive offensive against Boko Haram and ISWAP elements operating in the region.
The military has reassured residents of its determination to sustain operations aimed at eliminating terrorism and restoring lasting peace and security across the North-East.
