Tinubu Declares Insecurity, Poverty National Emergencies, Unveils Measures to Tackle Economic Hardship

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared insecurity and poverty as national emergencies, warning that the twin challenges pose a grave threat to Nigeria’s economic growth, social stability, and the welfare of workers across the country.

The President made the declaration during the 2026 International Workers’ Day celebration held at Eagle Square, where he was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

In his address to thousands of workers, labour leaders, and government officials, Tinubu acknowledged the severe impact of insecurity and widespread poverty on national productivity, investment, and the daily survival of millions of Nigerians.

He said the persistent security challenges, including banditry, insurgency, kidnapping, and attacks on farming communities, have disrupted livelihoods and deepened economic hardship, especially in rural areas where agriculture remains the main source of income.

According to the President, insecurity has not only displaced communities but also reduced food production, contributing to rising food inflation and increased hunger in many parts of the country.

Tinubu stressed that poverty remains one of the greatest threats to national peace and development, noting that economic hardship has placed enormous pressure on workers and vulnerable households.

He said his administration is intensifying efforts to address the crises through expanded military operations, improved intelligence gathering, and increased support for security agencies to restore peace across troubled regions.

On the economic front, the President highlighted ongoing interventions aimed at reducing hardship, including agricultural mechanization programmes, dry-season farming initiatives, and access to financial support for farmers and small-scale businesses.

Tinubu also reiterated his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare, stating that the implementation of the new national minimum wage, pension reforms, and settlement of outstanding gratuities remain key priorities of his government.

He said improving workers’ conditions is essential to driving productivity and sustaining economic recovery.

The President called on organized labour to continue engaging the government through dialogue and constructive partnerships, emphasizing that cooperation between workers and government is critical to addressing national challenges.

Labour leaders at the event used the opportunity to press for stronger economic reforms, improved wages, and urgent steps to tackle inflation and unemployment, which they say continue to erode workers’ purchasing power.

Political and economic analysts say Tinubu’s declaration signals growing government concern over the worsening socio-economic situation in the country, particularly as inflation and insecurity continue to affect millions of households.

The declaration comes at a time when Nigeria faces increasing public pressure over the high cost of living, food shortages, and persistent security challenges in several states, with many citizens calling for faster and more effective government action.
