Senate Showdown: Akpabio, Oshiomhole in Explosive Clash Over Controversial Rule Changes

A major drama unfolded at the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday as Senate President Godswill Akpabio openly threatened to remove Senator Adams Oshiomhole from the chamber during a tense plenary session that exposed deepening cracks within the upper legislative chamber.

The confrontation occurred during the consideration of the Senate Votes and Proceedings when Oshiomhole repeatedly attempted to interrupt proceedings to raise a point of order. Senate rules, however, do not permit lawmakers to interrupt while the Votes and Proceedings are being adopted.

Witnesses at the plenary said the atmosphere became tense after Oshiomhole insisted on being recognised despite repeated warnings from the Senate President.

Akpabio, visibly angered by the persistent interruptions, firmly ruled the former Edo State governor out of order and issued a direct warning that immediately drew attention across the chamber.

“If you become unruly, I will take you out of the Senate,” Akpabio declared during the heated exchange.

The warning reportedly triggered murmurs among senators, with some lawmakers attempting to calm tensions as the session briefly descended into confusion.

Sources within the Senate said the disagreement was linked to growing controversy surrounding recent amendments to the Senate Standing Rules. The amendments are believed to concern eligibility requirements for principal offices and procedures relating to presiding over sessions of the chamber.

The Senate Chief Whip, Senator Mohammed Monguno, later intervened and appealed to lawmakers to maintain decorum and allow proceedings to continue peacefully.
