Nigeria Police Expand Counter-Terrorism Capacity, Establish New CTU Bases

The has announced new measures aimed at strengthening its counter-terrorism operations, including specialised training for officers and the establishment of additional Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) bases across the country.

According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, , the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to enhance the operational readiness of personnel tasked with tackling terrorism, banditry, and other serious security threats.

The development follows a two-week specialised training programme on Close Quarter Battle and Intelligence Analysis organised for 56 officers drawn from the CTU. The programme was conducted in collaboration with the through the Office of the Counter Terrorism Regional Coordinator for West Africa.

Participants were trained on modern counter-terrorism tactics, intelligence gathering, and operational strategies designed to improve coordinated responses to emerging security challenges.

Speaking at the closing ceremony held at the Peacekeeping Conference Hall, Force Headquarters in , Lieutenant Colonel of the British High Commission commended the professionalism and commitment demonstrated by the officers. He encouraged them to apply the skills gained in the field and reaffirmed the British Government’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in strengthening regional counter-terrorism efforts.

In his remarks, the Inspector-General of Police, , represented by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Counter Terrorism Unit, , said the training reflects the determination of the police leadership to continually improve the operational capacity of officers in tackling evolving security threats.

He also expressed appreciation to the British Government for its continued partnership and strategic support to the Nigeria Police Force.

As part of broader security reforms, the Inspector-General approved the establishment of new CTU bases in , , and . Additional CTU personnel have also been deployed to strategic locations nationwide to improve rapid response capability and expand operational coverage.

The police reiterated their commitment to strengthening partnerships, building operational capacity, and deploying strategic resources to combat terrorism and other security threats across Nigeria.
