NiMet Forecasts Thunderstorms, Strong Winds Across Nigeria on Monday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has issued a weather alert predicting thunderstorms, rainfall, and strong winds across several parts of the country on Monday, April 13, 2026.

In its forecast released on Sunday, the agency stated that northern states are expected to experience largely sunny conditions in the morning, with isolated thunderstorms likely to develop later in the day over Adamawa and Taraba States. It noted that hot and sunny conditions will dominate early hours before giving way to localized rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds in the afternoon and evening.

For the North-Central region, NiMet projected cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine in the morning, followed by thunderstorms across parts of Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau, and the Federal Capital Territory. The agency warned that calm and warm morning conditions may quickly transition into stormy weather later in the day, urging residents to plan outdoor activities accordingly.

In the southern region, cloudy conditions are expected with chances of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall across states including Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. NiMet added that storm activity may intensify as the day progresses, potentially causing disruptions.

The agency also issued safety advisories, warning that strong winds may precede thunderstorms. Residents were advised to secure loose objects, while motorists were urged to exercise caution due to poor visibility and slippery roads. It also cautioned against staying in flood-prone areas during heavy rainfall.

NiMet further warned of possible lightning strikes and encouraged the public to seek safe shelter during storms. Airlines were also advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports to ensure safe flight operations.
