NNPCL Boosts Crude Supply to Dangote Refinery to Seven Cargoes

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has increased the volume of crude oil it supplies to the Dangote Refinery, with the facility expected to receive seven cargoes in May 2026—up from five cargoes in previous months.

Industry sources say the increase reflects a growing commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s domestic refining capacity and reducing reliance on imported petroleum products. The move is also seen as part of broader efforts to stabilise fuel supply and ease persistent pressure on pump prices across the country.

The Dangote Refinery, with an installed capacity of about 650,000 barrels per day, remains a critical asset in Nigeria’s energy sector. However, analysts note that the refinery requires between 13 and 15 cargoes of crude oil monthly to operate at full capacity, meaning the latest supply increase, while significant, still falls short of optimal demand.

Experts believe the additional cargoes could help improve production levels at the refinery, potentially leading to increased availability of refined products such as petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel in the domestic market. This could, in turn, reduce the country’s dependence on fuel imports and conserve foreign exchange.

The development comes amid ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, where authorities are pushing for greater efficiency, local value addition, and energy security. Increased collaboration between NNPCL and Dangote Refinery is expected to play a key role in achieving these objectives.

Market observers also point out that consistent crude supply to local refineries could enhance competition, improve pricing dynamics, and create a more resilient downstream sector over time.

While challenges such as global oil price volatility and supply logistics remain, the latest increase in crude allocation signals a positive step toward achieving long-term stability in Nigeria’s petroleum industry.
