India, Others Decline Tinubu’s Envoys Over Tenure Policy

Some countries, including India, have reportedly declined ambassadorial nominees put forward by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing diplomatic policies that discourage accepting envoys from governments with limited time left in office.

According to diplomatic sources, the affected nations raised concerns about the short remaining tenure of the current Nigerian administration, which may limit how long the proposed envoys would serve before a possible change of government.

Under international diplomatic practice, host countries must grant formal consent—known as agrément—before an ambassador-designate can assume duty. Countries are permitted to reject nominees without publicly stating detailed reasons.

Sources familiar with the matter indicated that some governments prefer ambassadors who can serve a minimum of two to three years to ensure continuity in bilateral relations and long-term diplomatic engagement.

Nigeria’s next general election is scheduled for 2027, meaning that some of the ambassadorial nominees may only have a relatively short period to serve if eventually approved.

Diplomatic observers say the situation may complicate Nigeria’s efforts to fully restore its diplomatic presence abroad following the recall of several ambassadors in previous years.

However, officials have clarified that not all countries have rejected the nominees, as some are still reviewing the diplomatic requests while others are yet to respond.

The Nigerian government has not issued an official statement on the development as of the time of filing this report.

Analysts note that the delay in appointing ambassadors has created a gap in Nigeria’s diplomatic representation in several countries, a situation experts say could affect the nation’s international engagements and bilateral relations.
