IG Moves to Secure Accreditation for Ogun Police Academy, 42 Police Colleges Nationwide

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has launched a major reform initiative aimed at strengthening police education in Nigeria by pushing for the full accreditation of a new Nigeria Police Academy campus in Ogun State and upgrading 42 police colleges across the country.

The move was disclosed after a high-level strategic meeting held at the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja, where key stakeholders in the education and policing sectors gathered to chart a new direction for police training and professional development.

According to the police, the initiative is part of a broader plan to modernize training institutions, improve learning infrastructure, and align police education with national academic and professional standards.

Discussions at the meeting focused on collaboration with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund for the construction of modern academic and training facilities, as well as engagement with the National Universities Commission for resource verification and accreditation processes.

The new police academy campus in Ogun State is expected to begin operations in the 2026 academic session, a move seen as part of efforts to expand the training capacity of the force and address manpower needs.

Speaking on the reform, the IGP emphasized that improving police colleges and academies remains critical to building a modern, disciplined, and service-oriented police force capable of addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

The reform drive comes amid ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to strengthen security institutions and improve professionalism within the police force through better education, tactical training, and institutional reforms.
