Gombe Flags Off 2026 Wet Season Fertilizer Distribution, Subsidises Fertilizer by 50%

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has flagged off the 2026 wet season sales and distribution of fertilizer and other agricultural inputs aimed at boosting food production and enhancing agricultural productivity across the state.

Speaking during the official launch, the governor announced that the state government had procured 12,000 metric tons of NPK 20:10:10 fertilizer, equivalent to approximately 240,000 bags, for distribution to farmers at a subsidised rate of N32,000 per 50kg bag, representing a 50 percent reduction from the prevailing market price.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya described the initiative as a demonstration of his administration’s commitment to revitalising agriculture and maintaining Gombe’s status as one of Nigeria’s leading agricultural states.

Beyond fertilizer distribution, the governor disclosed that the government would also provide a range of agricultural equipment and machinery free of charge to farmers. The items include 833 water pumps, 450 motorised weeders, 544 motorised sprayers, 550 rice transplanters, 350 peanut shellers, 50 rice and maize planters/harvesters, 50 rice milling machines, 45 walking tractors, and 20 oil filtering and oil press machines.

He urged farmers to embrace modern agricultural practices and climate-smart farming techniques, stressing that increased productivity would depend not only on access to farm inputs but also on the adoption of knowledge-driven farming methods.

The governor encouraged farmers to engage in dry-season farming and make use of weather forecasts and early warning systems provided by agricultural extension services and meteorological agencies to reduce the risks associated with drought, flooding, and pest infestations.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya also called for sustained peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders, describing Gombe as a model of harmony and mutual understanding. He urged security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, and youth groups to strengthen collaboration and vigilance to preserve peace in farming communities.

He warned that his administration would not tolerate any actions capable of disrupting peace and stability, assuring both crop farmers and livestock herders of government protection.

The governor noted that since assuming office in 2019, his administration has invested billions of naira in subsidised fertilizer procurement and the provision of agricultural inputs, including water pumps, herbicides, pesticides, and modern farming equipment.

He highlighted ongoing partnerships with the Federal Government, the World Bank, and development partners through programmes such as the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project, Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes, and Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project, which he said have strengthened the state's agricultural transformation agenda.

To ensure transparency, the governor announced the establishment of a special fertilizer distribution committee and directed security agencies to monitor the exercise closely to prevent diversion, fraud, and illegal sales.

“Anyone found sabotaging this process will face the full weight of the law. We will not allow a few individuals to undermine the welfare of our farmers and the food security of the state,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, the State Coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Absolom Akwaras, commended the governor for the timely intervention, describing it as a major boost to farmers and food production efforts.

The Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in Gombe State, Modibbo Sadiq Nafada, praised the administration’s continued support for agriculture and its efforts to address farmer-herder conflicts.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Gombe State Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Ahmed Saeed Guli, described the programme as another demonstration of the government's commitment to agricultural growth, rural development, and livestock transformation in the state.

The initiative is expected to support thousands of farmers during the 2026 farming season and contribute significantly to food security and economic growth in Gombe State.
