Gombe Approves Full Minimum Wage Implementation for LG, Health, Education Workers

Gombe, Nigeria - April 22, 2026

The Gombe State Government has approved the full implementation of the new national minimum wage for workers across the local government system, including Local Education Authority (LEA) staff and primary healthcare workers.

The approval, granted by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, will take effect from May 2026, according to a statement issued by the Head of Civil Service, Professor Muazu Shehu.

He explained that the directive covers employees in all 11 local government councils, as well as those in the education and primary healthcare sectors at the grassroots level.

With the latest development, the state government has now settled the outstanding 43 percent balance of the wage structure, completing 100 percent implementation of the new minimum wage.

Professor Shehu noted that improved financial conditions at the local government level made the full rollout possible, enabling councils to meet salary obligations without disruption.

He added that the move is expected to boost workers’ morale, enhance productivity, and strengthen service delivery across grassroots institutions.

Gombe State was among the early adopters of the new national minimum wage following its passage into law in 2024.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya has consistently emphasized the importance of workers’ welfare, describing civil servants as key drivers of governance and effective service delivery.

Organized labour groups, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have previously commended the administration for prioritizing workers’ welfare despite prevailing challenges.aallenges.
