FG Orders Arrest, Prosecution Over Alleged Sexual Assault at Delta Festival

The Federal Government has directed the immediate arrest and prosecution of individuals involved in alleged sexual assault linked to a local festival in Ozoro community, Delta State.

The directive was issued by the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, in a statement signed by the ministry’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ahmed Danbazau, in Abuja.

The action follows a viral video on social media alleging incidents of sexual assault during the Alue-Do Festival, popularly known as the “Festival of Fertility,” held in Ozoro Kingdom.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim expressed deep concern over reports that women were subjected to assault and harassment during the festival activities in Isoko North Local Government Area.

While commending the swift response of the Nigeria Police Force in Delta State, the minister called for a transparent, thorough, and accelerated investigation to ensure all those involved are identified and brought to justice without delay.

She described the incidents as disturbing and unacceptable, stressing that they violate human dignity, public safety, and the rule of law. She further noted that the Constitution and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP Act) clearly prohibit such offences.

“No cultural or traditional practice can justify or excuse sexual violence in any form. Sexual assault is a serious criminal offence, and all allegations must be thoroughly investigated, with perpetrators held fully accountable under the law,” she stated.

The minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to prioritising the safety, dignity, and protection of women and girls across the country.

She also disclosed plans to strengthen collaboration with the Delta State Ministry of Women Affairs to provide immediate support for victims, including psychosocial care, medical attention, and legal assistance.

In addition, Sulaiman-Ibrahim said efforts would be intensified to engage traditional leaders and community stakeholders to address harmful practices and prevent a recurrence.

The ministry urged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure justice is served and future incidents are prevented.
