Biu Lawmaker Clears ₦63 Million Electricity Debt, Urges YEDC to Restore Power Without Delay

Residents of Biu Local Government Area may soon witness the restoration of electricity following the settlement of an outstanding electricity debt by the member representing the Biu constituency, who has paid ₦63 million to the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC), Biu Business Unit (FCA).

The lawmaker announced the development in a public statement, describing the payment as a significant step towards ending the prolonged power outage that has affected thousands of residents, businesses, healthcare facilities, schools, and other public institutions across the local government area.

According to the statement, the payment was made to offset the outstanding electricity bill owed to the YEDC Biu Business Unit, removing one of the major obstacles to the restoration of electricity supply.

In addition to the debt settlement, the lawmaker commended the Borno State Government for its support in addressing the electricity crisis. He disclosed that the state government contributed ₦44.4 million to cover the cost of repairing damaged electricity infrastructure, a critical requirement for reconnecting the affected communities to the national grid.

He praised the state government's intervention, noting that the collaborative effort demonstrates a shared commitment to improving the welfare of residents and restoring essential public services.

Despite the financial commitments made by both parties, the lawmaker expressed concern over the continued blackout and appealed to the management of the YEDC Biu Business Unit to expedite the reconnection process.

He noted that the prolonged power outage has had devastating economic and social consequences, forcing many businesses to rely on expensive alternative energy sources, disrupting commercial activities, and making life increasingly difficult for households. He added that healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and other critical public services have also faced serious operational challenges due to the lack of electricity.

The lawmaker stressed that with the outstanding debt cleared and funds provided for the repair of damaged infrastructure, there should be no unnecessary delay in restoring electricity supply to Biu and surrounding communities.

He urged the management of the YEDC Biu Business Unit to treat the matter with the urgency it deserves and ensure that power is restored as quickly as possible to bring relief to residents who have endured months of hardship.

Residents have continued to express frustration over the prolonged blackout, citing its negative impact on livelihoods, economic activities, and the overall quality of life. Many are now hopeful that the settlement of the outstanding debt and the government's investment in repairing damaged infrastructure will pave the way for the immediate restoration of electricity across the affected areas.
