Bandits Can Be Located If Security Agencies Are Determined, Says Buratai

Former Chief of Army Staff and former Nigerian Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Tukur Yusuf Buratai, has stated that bandits and other criminal elements operating across Nigeria can be effectively located and neutralised if security agencies deploy the necessary intelligence, technology, and operational resources.

Buratai made the assertion while speaking on the persistent security challenges facing the country, particularly the activities of armed bandits, kidnappers, and insurgent groups in several parts of northern Nigeria. He stressed that criminal groups do not operate in isolation and inevitably leave trails that can be traced through intelligence gathering, surveillance, and coordinated security operations.

According to the former army chief, advances in technology have significantly improved the capacity of security agencies to monitor criminal activities, track movements, and identify hideouts in difficult terrains. He noted that with the right level of commitment and coordination among security institutions, many bandit camps and operational bases can be detected and dismantled.

Buratai emphasized the importance of intelligence-led operations, describing intelligence gathering as a critical component in the fight against insecurity. He said timely and accurate information remains essential for successful military and law enforcement operations, adding that security agencies must continue to strengthen collaboration and information-sharing mechanisms.

The retired army general also highlighted the role of local communities in addressing insecurity, urging residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information on suspicious activities within their areas. He said community support is vital in helping security personnel identify criminal networks and prevent attacks before they occur.

While acknowledging the sacrifices being made by members of the armed forces and other security agencies, Buratai called for sustained efforts and adequate support from government at all levels to enhance operational effectiveness. He maintained that a combination of modern surveillance technology, effective intelligence gathering, and strong inter-agency cooperation would significantly improve the country's ability to tackle banditry and related security threats.

Buratai expressed optimism that with greater determination, strategic planning, and public support, security agencies can substantially reduce criminal activities and restore peace to communities affected by banditry, kidnapping, and insurgency across Nigeria. He urged stakeholders to remain united in the collective effort to secure lives and property and strengthen national security.
