Abuja, Nigeria 🇳🇬 June 14, 2026
Eminent Nigerians, diplomats, academics, traditional rulers, and political leaders converged on Abuja to celebrate former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), during the unveiling of books written in his honour, recognizing his immense contributions to nation-building, democratic governance, and peace mediation across Africa.
The event, held as part of activities marking the 84th birthday of the respected elder statesman, drew distinguished guests from across the country and beyond, all united in paying tribute to a man widely regarded as one of Nigeria's most influential advocates for peace, unity, and democratic stability.
Among the publications unveiled at the ceremony were “Mediating for Peace in Africa: A Festschrift in Honor of General Abdulsalami A. Abubakar” and “Nigeria's Grand Patriot: Abdulsalami Alhaji Abubakar, GCFR.” The books chronicle the former military leader's remarkable journey in public service and his contributions to conflict resolution, diplomacy, and democratic development both within Nigeria and across the African continent.
Speakers at the event described General Abdulsalami as a leader whose commitment to national unity and peaceful coexistence has earned him respect across political, ethnic, and religious divides. They noted that his decision to successfully oversee Nigeria's transition from military to civilian rule in 1999 remains one of the defining moments in the country's democratic history.
Delivering goodwill messages, several dignitaries praised the former Head of State for his humility, integrity, and unwavering dedication to promoting peace and stability. They highlighted his continued role in mediation efforts through various national and international platforms, including election observation missions, conflict resolution initiatives, and advocacy for good governance.
The ceremony also witnessed the unveiling of the Abdulsalami Abubakar African Resource Centre (AAARC), a new institution established to advance research, policy dialogue, leadership development, and capacity building in areas such as governance, peacebuilding, security, and sustainable development. Organizers said the centre would serve as a platform for preserving and promoting the ideals that have defined General Abdulsalami's public life.
In their remarks, scholars and contributors to the books emphasized that the publications were not only a celebration of the former leader's achievements but also a valuable documentation of lessons in leadership, patriotism, and public service for future generations.
Many speakers described General Abdulsalami as a bridge-builder whose interventions have helped strengthen democratic institutions and foster peaceful political transitions in several African countries. They noted that his influence extends beyond Nigeria's borders, making him a respected voice in regional and continental affairs.
Responding to the tributes, General Abdulsalami expressed appreciation to the organizers, authors, and guests for the honour bestowed upon him. He reaffirmed his commitment to the ideals of peace, national unity, and democratic governance, urging Nigerians to continue working together for the progress and stability of the country.
The event ended with renewed calls on leaders at all levels to embrace dialogue, tolerance, and selfless service, values that participants said have consistently characterized General Abdulsalami Abubakar's life and leadership.
The unveiling ceremony served not only as a celebration of an accomplished statesman but also as a reflection on the enduring importance of visionary leadership, peacebuilding, and national cohesion in shaping Nigeria's future.
