ADC Members Protest in Abuja, Demand INEC Chairman’s Suspension, Recognition of David Mark

Abuja, Nigeria – Wednesday, April 8, 2026

Thousands of members and supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Wednesday staged a massive protest in Abuja, calling for sweeping reforms in Nigeria’s electoral system and the recognition of David Mark as the party’s National Chairman.

The protesters, drawn from different parts of the country, converged on major streets in the Federal Capital Territory before marching toward the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), expressing dissatisfaction with what they described as bias and administrative irregularities within the commission.

Among their key demands was the immediate suspension of the INEC Chairman, whom they accused of undermining internal party processes. The demonstrators insisted that INEC must respect the ADC’s internal resolutions and formally recognize David Mark as the legitimate leader of the party.

The protest was led by prominent political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.

The leaders joined supporters in a peaceful march, chanting slogans and carrying placards calling for justice, transparency, and adherence to democratic principles.

Addressing the crowd, the political leaders stressed the importance of electoral integrity and warned against actions capable of undermining Nigeria’s democratic system. They maintained that the ADC remains committed to lawful engagement but would firmly defend the will of its members.

Security operatives were deployed across key areas leading to the INEC headquarters to maintain order. While no incidents of violence were reported, the protest caused traffic disruptions in several parts of Abuja.

The demonstration highlights deepening tensions within the ADC and raises broader concerns about political party governance and the role of electoral institutions in Nigeria’s democracy.

As of press time, efforts to obtain an official response from INEC were ongoing.
