President Tinubu Nominates Lamido Yuguda as CBN Deputy Governor

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the nomination of Lamido Abubakar Yuguda as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), subject to confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.

The nomination, according to the Presidency, is in line with Section 8(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, which empowers the President to appoint deputy governors of the apex bank pending Senate approval.

Yuguda’s nomination follows the recent appointment of the former Deputy Governor, Bala Bello, as Special Adviser to the President on Political Economy.

President Tinubu urged the newly nominated deputy governor and other officials to carry out their responsibilities with renewed dedication, professionalism, and commitment to Nigeria’s economic stability and growth.

Prior to the nomination, Lamido Yuguda served as the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission Nigeria (SEC) from 2020 to 2024, where he oversaw reforms and regulatory activities in Nigeria’s capital market.

Yuguda is an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accountancy in 1983. He later obtained a Master’s degree in Money, Banking and Finance from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom in 1991.

He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder, reflecting his strong professional background in finance and economics.

Lamido Yuguda began his career in 1984 at the Central Bank of Nigeria as a Senior Supervisor in the Foreign Operations Department. He later worked as an economist in the Africa Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 1997 to 2001 before returning to the CBN.

He eventually retired from the apex bank in 2016 after serving as Director of the Reserve Management Department for six years, bringing decades of experience in banking, economic policy, and financial market regulation.

The nomination was announced in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
