Police Debunk UTME Security Threat Rumours, Assure Safety Nationwide

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed reports alleging insecurity threats at some examination centres in a North Central state ahead of the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), describing the claims as unfounded and without credible evidence.

The examination, organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), is scheduled to begin on April 16, 2026, across the country.

In a statement released on Tuesday, April 14, the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, said the police were aware of the circulating rumours but stressed that the Force does not act on unverified information. He noted, however, that the police have taken public concerns seriously, especially regarding the safety and future of candidates.

According to him, proactive security measures have already been put in place nationwide to ensure a hitch-free examination process. He revealed that additional security personnel have been deployed to examination centres across the country, both visibly and covertly, to prevent any form of disruption.

“These measures include routine patrols, perimeter surveillance, and the deployment of rapid response teams at strategic locations,” he said.

Placid further disclosed that the police are working closely with other security agencies to monitor developments and respond swiftly to any potential threats. He warned that any attempt to disrupt the examination would be met with decisive action.

The NPF reassured candidates, parents, and the general public of a safe and conducive environment for the conduct of the UTME. Candidates were advised to arrive early at their centres, comply with examination guidelines, and report any suspicious activities to security personnel.

The police also urged the public to disregard unverified information circulating on social media and rely only on official updates from JAMB and the NPF.

Reaffirming its commitment to national peace and security, the Force pledged to ensure the smooth conduct of the examination and called for continued cooperation from stakeholders and sister security agencies.
