Opposition Leaders Meet in Abuja, Move to Strengthen PDP–ADC Alliance

Abuja, Nigeria – April 8, 2026

Stakeholders and top figures of Nigeria’s opposition parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), have held an emergency meeting in Abuja to address growing challenges facing opposition politics in the country.

The high-level meeting, held in the nation’s capital, brought together prominent political actors including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Senate President David Mark, and former Minister Tanimu Turaki, alongside other senior party stakeholders.

According to information obtained by Orbit News 24, the meeting was convened amid rising concerns over internal crises within opposition parties, allegations of political interference, and fears of coordinated efforts to weaken opposition structures nationwide.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the deliberations, the stakeholders accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and elements within the Federal Government of attempting to destabilize opposition parties through internal divisions, legal disputes, and administrative actions.

The leaders warned that such developments could undermine Nigeria’s democratic system, stressing that a strong opposition remains vital for accountability, transparency, and effective governance.

Speaking during the session, Atiku Abubakar called for unity among opposition leaders, urging them to set aside personal interests in favor of a collective agenda. He noted that the strength of Nigeria’s democracy depends largely on the resilience of its opposition.

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, in his remarks, emphasized the need for internal reforms, calling on opposition parties to strengthen their structures and deepen grassroots engagement to withstand external pressures.

Also speaking, David Mark highlighted the importance of discipline, dialogue, and strict adherence to party constitutions in resolving internal disputes, while Tanimu Turaki advocated for stronger legal protections to safeguard political parties from undue interference.

A key resolution of the meeting was the establishment of a joint strategic committee comprising representatives of both the PDP and ADC. The committee is expected to harmonize positions, address internal challenges, and develop a unified roadmap ahead of future political activities.

The stakeholders further resolved to expand consultations with other opposition parties, civil society organisations, and pro-democracy groups to build a broader coalition aimed at protecting democratic institutions and ensuring credible electoral processes.

They also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remain neutral and uphold the rule of law in all political matters.

The meeting ended with a renewed commitment to unity, resilience, and collaboration, as opposition leaders pledged to work together to overcome current challenges and present Nigerians with a credible political alternative.
