INEC Debunks Fake X Account Claim, Warns Against Misinformation

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed claims circulating on social media alleging that its Chairman operates an account on X (formerly Twitter), describing the report as false and misleading.

In a press statement issued on April 10, 2026, the Commission clarified that its Chairman does not own or manage any personal account on the social media platform and has never engaged in partisan commentary.

INEC stated that the viral post attributed to the Chairman was “a total fabrication” aimed at damaging his integrity and undermining the neutrality of the Commission, especially at a time when preparations for upcoming elections and electoral reforms are underway.

The Commission further revealed that the development is part of a broader pattern of cyber fraud, noting that imposters have previously created fake social media accounts in the Chairman’s name to deceive the public and defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.

According to INEC, several of such accounts have already been identified and reported to security agencies, with ongoing efforts to track those responsible for the latest misinformation campaign.

The Commission warned that it would not tolerate attempts to tarnish its leadership, stressing that individuals behind such acts would face legal consequences under Nigeria’s Cybercrimes Act.

INEC also urged Nigerians to rely only on its verified communication channels for accurate information, assuring the public of its continued commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections.
