FG Unveils Nationwide Radio Initiative to Boost Adult Literacy, Skills Acquisition

The Federal Government has concluded plans to launch a dedicated radio station focused on adult education, literacy development, and vocational training as part of efforts to tackle illiteracy and empower millions of Nigerians with practical knowledge and life skills.

The initiative, which targets adults in rural and underserved communities, is expected to provide educational content through radio broadcasts accessible across different parts of the country. The station will air programmes on basic literacy, entrepreneurship, agriculture, health awareness, civic responsibilities, financial management, and vocational skills development.

Government officials said the project was introduced to bridge the educational gap affecting adults who were unable to complete formal schooling due to poverty, insecurity, cultural barriers, or lack of access to educational facilities.

According to the authorities, the radio station will broadcast in English, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, and other indigenous languages to ensure wider participation and understanding among listeners from diverse backgrounds.

The government noted that radio remains one of the most effective communication tools in Nigeria, especially in remote communities where internet access and digital learning facilities are limited. Officials added that the station would allow adults to learn from their homes, farms, markets, and workplaces without disrupting their daily activities.

The programme is also expected to support women, out-of-school youths, artisans, farmers, and small business owners by equipping them with practical skills capable of improving productivity and economic opportunities.

Education experts have described the initiative as a major step toward promoting inclusive and lifelong learning in Nigeria. They stressed that adult education plays a vital role in national development by reducing poverty, improving employment opportunities, and increasing civic participation.

The Federal Government said the station would work closely with relevant educational agencies, development partners, and state governments to ensure effective implementation and nationwide coverage.

The official unveiling of the adult education radio station is expected in the coming weeks as part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s non-formal education system and achieving sustainable development goals in education.
