FG Approves Additional Deep Seaports to Expand Nigeria’s Maritime Capacity

The Federal Government has approved the development of additional deep seaports across Nigeria as part of efforts to strengthen the nation’s maritime infrastructure, improve trade efficiency and boost economic growth.

Speaking on the development, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, said the initiative is aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s position as a major maritime hub in West and Central Africa.

According to the minister, the approval of new deep seaports forms part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to modernise the country’s port system, ease congestion at existing ports and improve supply chain operations.

Oyetola noted that the expansion of deep seaport infrastructure would attract foreign investments, create employment opportunities and increase the country’s capacity to handle larger cargo vessels engaged in international trade.

He explained that the government is committed to improving port efficiency and reducing delays associated with cargo handling and transportation, adding that the projects are expected to support industrialisation and strengthen Nigeria’s blue economy agenda.

The minister further stated that the new ports would complement existing facilities while boosting regional trade competitiveness and enhancing connectivity between Nigeria and global markets.

Industry stakeholders have continued to advocate for the expansion of deep seaport facilities, citing increasing trade volumes and the need for modern maritime infrastructure capable of handling growing commercial activities.

The Federal Government has in recent years intensified efforts to reposition the maritime sector as a key driver of economic diversification and national revenue generation.
