Banditry Hits Deputy Governor’s Family as Gunmen Abduct Relatives in Sokoto

The worsening security crisis in Sokoto State has taken a disturbing turn after suspected bandits abducted several relatives of the state’s Deputy Governor, Idris Muhammad Gobir, during a late-night attack in Sabon Birni Local Government Area.

Reports say the armed attackers stormed Garin Idi village under Sabon Birni, firing sporadically to create panic before taking away eight residents, including members of the deputy governor’s extended family.

Local sources confirmed that the incident has thrown the affected families and the entire community into fear and uncertainty, as concerns grow over the safety of those kidnapped.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers operated for hours without resistance, moving from house to house and carrying out the abduction before fleeing into nearby forests.

In addition to the kidnappings, the bandits were reported to have looted mobile phones, cash, and other valuables from residents during the raid.

The attack has once again raised concerns over the persistent insecurity in eastern parts of Sokoto, particularly in Sabon Birni, an area that has repeatedly witnessed bandit attacks in recent years.

Residents have called on security agencies and the state government to intensify rescue efforts and strengthen security presence in vulnerable communities.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities are yet to issue a detailed official statement on the incident or the ongoing rescue operations.
